A Marketing Tip You May Not Want to Know but Using it Will Skyrocket Your Business

The other day I stopped at a grocery store I had never shopped at before. After going through the check out line, I discovered that I was supposed to bag my own groceries.

Although I do not mind bagging my own groceries, I had not done it since I was a kid. First I struggled getting the plastic bags to release from the dispenser. Instead of one plastic bag, I pulled out 15-20. Next, I had trouble getting the plastic bag to open so I could put my groceries in. But after several attempts I finally got one bag of groceries packed.

However, I was too slow and I was holding up the line as well as the cashier. So the cashier jumped in and started helping me. I watched as an 18-year old kid moved faster than lightening bagging up my groceries. In fact, the kid was so fast; he had bagged up 11 compared to my 1.

It was at this point that I realized something: It doesn’t matter how smart or intelligent you are when performing a task for the first time. The important thing to remember is that the more often you do a task, the faster you become and the higher level of expert status that you receive.

For example: Have you ever tried to hang a wallpaper border? The first one you did in your life probably took over an hour. But if your job was to hang wallpaper borders every day, 5 days a week – how long would it take you to hang the border? I talked to a decorator that said it used to take her 1 hour to hang a 10-foot wallpaper border. Now she can do the job in less than 5 minutes. But in order to achieve that level, she said she had to hang wallpaper borders in over 350 houses.

A Lesson For Your Business That You May Now Want to Know

Many people today start a business and expect to achieve expert level within 30 minutes (a little bit of an exaggeration). What do you think would have happened if the decorator had given up because she didn’t want to spend time hanging wallpaper in 350 homes before achieving an expert skill level? Suppose she wanted to be at that level within 30 days after starting her business? Do you think this would be a possibility? Of course not. And for the decorator to continue thinking she can, or wasting time trying to find ways to cut corners, everything she does with these goals in mind is simply a waste of time.

Although most people do not want to know the truth, I am going to tell you anyway and hopefully it will wake up some people out there reading this.

It’s like this folks: Unless you have an unlimited about of money that you don’t know what to do with, or if you have relatives and investors with an unlimited amount of money to back you – you ARE NOT GOING TO GET RICH OVERNIGHT. That I can guarantee.

Just like the decorator who started her business hanging wallpaper borders. It took her 1 hour to hang 10-feet of border. She was charging $50 per 10-foot for her service. However, when she was able to increase her speed and efficiency, she was able to hang 200-feet of wallpaper border in the same 1 hour of time, netting her on the average of $1,000 per hour. Now you can begin to see the importance and necessity of improving and perfecting your skills and taking the time and effort to do so.

How Virtual Bankruptcy Assistants Can Increase and Perfect Their Skills

Below are just a few of the ways you can use to help increase your skills to a higher level as a virtual bankruptcy assistant.

1. http://www.713training.com/avba/index.html
Download the AVBA Exam. It is free. The AVBA Exam will give you a complete set of Client Intake Forms to practice with.

2. http://pacer.psc.uscourts.gov/
Login to PACER (or sign up for a free account) and review some of the pleadings that have been filed in bankruptcy cases. Read them and try to understand them. Don’t worry if you are confused the first time you read legal documents. Don’t despair. The more you read them, the better you will get. Also, look at the case summaries and spend time determining the facts of each the case by reviewing the bankruptcy petition.

3. Join a Virtual Assistant organization. This will put you in touch with other virtual assistants and provide ongoing support and training for you to grow your business.

Here are the major ones:

http://www.ivaa.org/
http://www.vanetworking.com/
http://iavoa.org/

Or for a long list of many more, visit:
http://www.virtualassistantbusiness.com/virtual-assistant-organizations.html

Tip: As you visit these websites, scroll down and review the entire page. You can pick up a lot of other good information to help advance your knowledge and build your business.

4. http://www.abiworld.org
Check this website on a weekly basis to keep up with changes and important news in the bankruptcy world. If you have an extra $250, you can join their organization. By joining, you have access to a lot more information as well as the invaluable bankruptcy attorney directory.

5. Read and/or subscribe to bankruptcy blogs.
Blogs are different than subscribing to an ezine and receiving it by email. Because scammers have used email to flood the market with their sales pitches, blogs were invented to change all that. By subscribing to a blog, you visit the blog when you want to. You also get important insider information dedicated to one specific topic. In other words, you don’t have to search through a bunch of ads to get to the good stuff.

Below are a few bankruptcy blogs you may want to view or subscribe to:

Summary

You will hear marketing experts tell you to “pick a business you enjoy doing.” One reason this advice is important is because you will be completing tasks over and over and over again until you reach the expert level. If you do not enjoy the work, you will not put forth the necessary effort to accomplish your goals.

My prayers and thoughts go with you and I sincerely hope each one of you achieves success in your small business.

Questions and Answers from VBAs

QUESTION:

I was searching online last night and I ran across a company that sets you up in the judgment recovery business. What is this? (Matt)

ANSWER:

Before I answer that question, let me try to help you get the answer on your own. What is a judgment? It is a debt that someone does not pay and a court judgment is filed against them. What is recovery? The word means to get something back that rightfully belongs to another person.

Therefore, judgment recovery would be the same thing as a collector, or maybe even a type of “bounty” hunter. It is common knowledge, that most people who refuse to pay a bill, and even after a court hearing, they still refuse to pay it – will probably never pay the bill. Instead, you will need to use force and fear tactics in order to pry the money from their hands.

If you are the type of person that enjoys collecting, or you have worked as a collector before and liked the work, by all means – check out judgment recovery and go for it. It might be right up your alley; but as for me, I don’t enjoy collecting. Besides, I am really bad at it and it doesn’t fit my personality type.

QUESTION:

I just wanted to let you know that I am doing well and I am starting a new job working as a virtual assistant for an attorney who is local. Will keep you posted on my success. God bless you. Tell Angie Boyd I said Hi. (Elizabeth)

ANSWER:

Congratulations Elizabeth! I am very happy for you. We need to have you on an upcoming teleconference so you can tell others what you did to find the attorney. God bless you also. Keep in touch.

QUESTION:

I am not making any money. I have purchased all the training materials and did everything you tell me to do in your books. But nothing is working. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong? (Beth)

ANSWER:

Not from the information you provided. In order to determine your problem I will need to do a marketing analysis. Please forward me the marketing materials you used and information as to who you marked to. I also need to talk with you on the phone to understand exactly what steps you performed and how you performed them. Together, I am sure we can figure out the problem.

UPDATE:

After a complete review of Beth’s marketing materials and her marketing strategies, she was doing everything right. So I asked her: “How long have you been marketing using these methods?” Beth replied: “Two weeks.” Immediately I found the problem. Beth was expecting instant results. Beth was used to working for employers all her life and she thought that when she worked two weeks, she should be paid.

This is a common misconception by people who have never owned and operated their own business before. The truth of the matter is that if you market every day, it could take up to 3 months before you see any effect of your marketing. That is why it is important to have some type of income coming in to pay your personal and necessary living expenses until your company is bringing in enough income to pay its expenses plus a salary that you can afford to live on.

How much time does this take? It is different for everyone, so I cannot answer that question. But I can tell you that consistent and targeted marketing will WORK. You cannot give up and you must continue believing in your service. Success takes time. It just depends on when you decide the “give up” point is.

For me, I never gave up regardless of the consequences and eventually all that hard work paid off. I certainly am NOT rich or wealthy by any means. But I can afford to stay home full-time and live an average lifestyle. I am not like those “business opportunity” people on television. I do not have a $200 million-dollar mansion filled with Roles Royce cars. I work six days a week, 10-15 hours per day and I do it because I enjoy staying at home and being my own boss.

QUESTION:

Hello. My name is Christine. I am presently a certified notary signing agent in search of ways that I may draw in additional fund via my home based business. Due to the economy the housing market has slowed down quite a bit in my area. I have been reviewing the programs that you offer and was wondering if you would take a moment to explain to me the difference in 2 of your books. I am not exactly sure the difference in these 2 books and their offerings.

1. How to start a Bankruptcy Assistant Service
2. How to start a Bankruptcy Forms Processing Service

ANSWER:

Both are the same book, but “How to Start a Bankruptcy Forms Processing Service” was written BEFORE the bankruptcy law changed. “How to Start a Bankruptcy Assistant Service” was written AFTER the bankruptcy law changed.

I have notified Amazon, Barnes and Noble as well as Ingram Publishers that the old book (written before the law changed) is out of print. But for some reason, it is taking longer than expected for the distributors to take it off the market. I apologize for the confusion.

QUESTION:

Hi. Please find my account and profile. It was done almost a year ago over the phone with a lady. Thank you. Lucy

ANSWER:

This email should be part of the “Internet Funnies” I used to publish. We have no clue what this email is asking, but I wanted to include it to help some of you write better emails. Always remember to include the four W’s in all emails you send: The four W’s are: who, what, when and where. Otherwise, no one will understand what you are talking about.

QUESTION:

Dear Victoria: Thank you very much for today’s bankruptcy tips. I am always amazed at how you continually provide support for the virtual bankruptcy assistant field.

It has taken me a great deal of time to finally get around to the point where I could seriously concentrate on the VBA business. As I mentioned on the last teleconference, I was recently able to obtain an SBA guaranteed loan to permit me to cover market costs and other expenses while I am building the business. I have also just finished up working on a construction project that kept me occupied (and tired out) for the past 7 months. So, now I feel that I am finally able to get busy with some serious marketing.

I will keep you apprised of how it goes. Thank you for your continued interest and support. George.

ANSWER:

You are more than welcome. I enjoy helping others who are truly sincere about this business. You have taken one good step. You have secured some type of income to pay your personal expenses while you are building your business. Good move George.

QUESTION:

Dear Victoria: Karri Watson has published a review of your book: HOW TO START A VIRTUAL BANKRUPTCY ASSISTANT SERVICE for the online book journal Curled Up With a Good Book has been posted to http://www.curledup.com/virtualb.htm. Thank you.

Sharon Schulz-Elsing
Contributing Editor
Curled Up With a Good Book
http://www.curledup.com

ANSWER:

Thank you so much for your review. This was unexpected and I sincerely appreciate you letting me know of the online review so I could share it with our customers and members.

QUESTION:

I am a corporate/securities paralegal with over 14 years experience, who has been asked to assist our Bankruptcy Dept who mainly handles Chapter 11 cases. Do you have a CD, DVD or training course that can bring me up to speed with assisting our Bankruptcy Dept? I have absolutely no experience in Bankruptcy other than what I learned in paralegal school 15 years ago.

I just purchased the book: “Basic Bankruptcy Law for Paralegals” by David Buchbinder which is an excellent source. However, I wanted more practical hands on practice; i.e. interactive CD or similar. Kim

ANSWER:

Chapter 11 is an entire different ballgame compared to Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 petitions. Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy is specifically for individuals. Chapter 11 is reserved for businesses only. As you know, businesses have a completely different agenda in regard to assets and debts compared to George and Emma who live down the street.

But the answer to your question is “no.” We do not provide any training or support for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. This is an area of bankruptcy that must be trained onsite at the office and only with the interaction of a licensed bankruptcy attorney. Therefore, you should seek CLE courses offered by your local Bar Association or online classes for attorneys regarding Chapter 11. You may want to start your research at http://www.abiworld.org I wish you the best of success.

How to Solve 99.9% of Your Computer and Internet Problems

One day in the not-so-distant future, you turn on your computer to get your email. But nothing happens. Instead, your computer is telling you there is a “fatal error” and wants to start in “Windows safe mode.” You panic because you don’t know what to do.

After the panic attack, you call a computer repair store in your local area. But in order for them to help you, you will need to unplug all the cords going to the CPU and transport it to the computer repair store. When you arrive you discover there is a $80 charge just to look at the problem. On top of that, there are a lot of people ahead of you and it will take from 3-5 business days before you can pick your computer back up.

What a mess! But thousands of small business owners across the nation experience scenarios like this every day.

This is one reason why many computer technicians are implementing network capabilities (via the internet) to quickly and efficiently solve your individual computer problems. The computer technician will connect with your IP (Internet Protocol) address and be able to see your entire computer desktop. The computer technician can then take control of your keyboard and quickly isolate the problem. All you need to do is sit there and watch.

Angie Boyd of BankruptcyPlus.Com had this to say about our vendor, Monkey Productions:

“All I do is send Money Productions an email about my computer problem. Then, within 24-hours the problem is almost always fixed. It’s fast, easy and very convenient. Plus the prices are extremely low compared to a normal computer repair store. For someone like me that is not technical savvy, this is the perfect service to keep my internet business running 24 hours a day.”

713Training.Com has been utilizing this technology as a customer of Monkey Products for over five years. Their contact information is:

Monkey Productions
Marysville, Ohio
Office: 614-503-4546

We highly recommend that you contact Monkey Productions to put an end to your computer and internet problems. Geoff Gratz, the owner, is a Certified Dell Technician and works as a computer repair specialist. Because of low overhead expenses, his prices are 50-75% lower than most computer repair stores.

To get started utilizing the services of Monkey Productions:

1. Call Geoff Gratz at 614-503-4546 and tell him you were referred by 713Training.Com

2. Request to be set-up for remote computer technical assistance.

3. Then, when you have a computer problem, you simply email Monkey Productions.

4. When your problem is solved, you will be invoiced by email.

Additionally, Monkey Productions can save you $100s of dollars on new computer or laptop purchases. So before purchasing a new computer or laptop, contact Geoff Gratz for a quote.

The Reality of Starting a Business

When Henry Ford decided to build a horseless carriage, do you think he called someone he did not know and asked them how much money he was going to make?

When Melvin E. Hershey decided to market chocolate to the world, do you think he called someone in another state and asked them how long it would take him to start his business?

When Dave Thomas decided to start Wendy’s Restaurants, do you think he called another business owner and asked them if his idea was lucrative and if he would be successful?

The answer to all three of these questions is: NO. However, people call our office every day and ask us these three questions:

1. How much money can I make?
2. How long will it take to start this business?
3. Is this business lucrative and will I be successful?

If I were a scam artist with only one idea in mind: to steal people’s money, I would probably tell these callers that they can make money immediately, that anyone can do this business and everyone can be successful without any effort. But I would be lying.

The truth of the matter is that I can never tell a person if they will become successful and how much money they will make. No one can answer these questions. The only truthful answer you can get to these questions can only be provided by ONE person. That person is YOU.

We had a law clerk call the office a couple of weeks ago. He asked us how long it would take him to read the book: “How to Start a Virtual Bankruptcy Assistant Service“. At first, we were a little shocked, but we told him we did not know how fast he could read; therefore, we could not provide him with a realistic time period it would take him to read a book.

But the law student became angry and wanted us to also tell him how long it would take to comprehend the information because he had an exam coming up. Even if I worked beside this guy in the same office for several months, I still could not answer his question. But this person expected us to give him an answer based on the knowledge that we had never met him in our life.

People, you have got to wake up. Take charge of your destiny. Stop depending on people to answer questions that only you can answer. Before anyone can properly help you or give you advice, you must take an initiative to find the answers on your own.

When Henry Ford, Melvin Hershey and Dave Thomas decided to start their empires, they initially began as a home based business. They focused their efforts into developing a product that was different from anything available on the market at the time. Money was not their primary focus and it should not be yours either.

If you are serious about developing a long-term career you cannot possibly expect to become rich overnight. You cannot expect to have everything right NOW. Instead, you should concentrate your efforts into developing the BEST product or service you can possibly develop. Once you achieve that goal, you will find the money will come easily. But if you take the hard road of believing that money is quick and easy to make, any money you do happen to make will quickly be gone and you will have to start all over again.

However, if you need money now, sign up to work as a temporary in the field you are pursuing so you will not be tied down to a permanent job. For example, if your business provides legal services, work temporary assignments for law firms. You need to have some form of money coming in to pay the rent and other bills until your business is earning enough to support itself, plus pay you a salary. Starting a business today and expecting it to provide you with a substantial income in 24 hours is nothing more than a head trip to “Fantasy Land.”

Over the course of my 20-year career as an entrepreneur, I have watched many people jump from one business failure to another business failure. It is my sincerest hope that you do not become one of these people. Although I would love to know that everyone reading these words builds a financially strong and long term business they are proud to pass down to their children, I also know this is not realistic. Hopefully this article will help to inspire some of you to take a more positive attitude toward building your business.

Confidence in Your Service is an Important Key in Marketing

I don’t think there is anything more exciting on earth than to market and grow a business. In my opinion, the only reason people do not find marketing exciting is because they either don’t know what it is, or they lack the ability to believe in their product or service.

Let me give you an example. Lets suppose that you are one the billions of people who knows how to boil an egg. If someone approached you and said: “I don’t know how to boil an egg. If I paid you $100, would you teach me how?” would you turn them down? Of course not. You would probably be saying to yourself: “Boy, this is an easy way to make a quick $100.”

Why are you so quick and willing to make this $100? Is it because you have total confidence in the fact that you can show this person how to boil an egg without any problem? But what if someone walked up to you and said: “I will pay you $1,000 if you will show me how to calculate the mathematical breakdown of nitrogen.” In most cases, you probably would not know how to do that.

Faced with this situation, you have four choices:

1. Be honest. Turn the job down and not make any money.

2. Invest into education and work with scientists in order to learn exactly how to do the mathematical breakdown of nitrogen (which takes a long time).

3. Accept the $1,000 job and have the work performed by a scientist (which means you will have to pay the scientist and make less money).

4. Lie to the customer, take their money, and provide them with a textbook answer (which is a poor quality, deceptive service that will get you in trouble.)

Regardless of the choice you make, the fact remains – you do not know how to calculate the mathematical breakdown of nitrogen. Therefore, you have NO confidence in your service and can never effectively market it. It would be easier to start a business charging people $100 to teach them how to boil an egg (something you KNOW you can do) rather than starting a business charging people $1,000 to teach them about scientific calculations.

On the surface, it looks like you would make more money with the $1,000 per order service business – but in the real world, you cannot make money and build a successful company unless you know your product or service inside and out, plus have the self-confidence in knowing you will do an exceptional job.

Too many people start a business with only one thing in mind: making money. That’s how I started my first business back in 1988. I was living on unemployment while looking for a job. But my business did not immediately start making money. I had to still pay the rent, utilities and feed myself. So I started an at-home service typing dissertations for graduates at Ohio State University. I hated the job but I forced myself to do the work because I needed the extra money. Do you think that my typing business became successful? Nope! Although I provided an excellent service and did my job well, I hated the work. The moment something else came along, I dropped the typing service.

Sometimes, we all have to start and end several different types of businesses before we finally discover something we really like to do. But if you do find something you really enjoy doing (whether you get paid for it or not), learn to do that job better than most people. Study the field. Talk to people who are already in the field. Join organizations and local clubs where people in the field get together. Buy books, audios and videos relating to the field and increase your knowledge. Take pride in the quality of your product or service. Be better than your competition. This is the true way to build a successful company that will last for many years.

Email Marketing Analysis

I received an email this week from a virtual bankruptcy assistant who was attempting to market her services to me. The email said:

I am experienced in the VBA industry and have been a signing agent as well for 3 years…Always punctually, and haven’t had one deficiency notice yet!

PROBLEM NO. 1

The sentence structure demonstrates very poor English. In the first sentence this virtual assistant is really trying to say:

I have 3 years of experience in the real estate industry as a notary signing agent, including experience as a virtual bankruptcy assistant.

PROBLEM NO. 2

Even if I were interested in hiring a VBA, why would I care that this lady worked as a notary signing agent? Unless this person can show me the relative nature of why being a notary signing agent is important in the VBA industry, she should have left off her reference of notary experience.

PROBLEM NO. 3

The email begins with no introduction. I have no idea why this person is contacting me. Instead, she immediately starts the email with a sentence that talks about her. She does nothing to draw the potential customer (me) into reading the rest of the email. This is one of the major mistakes people make when they are beginning to market their businesses. They spend time telling their customers how wonderful their services are and how much knowledge they have. The customer really does not care. They only want to know what you are going to do for them and what the bottom line is. Period.

This person should have started her email with an introduction like:

I found your website on the internet and believe the services my company provides will be beneficial to you. The following are the benefits I can provide to your company ….. (List the benefits.)

PROBLEM NO. 4

The sentence: “Always punctually, and haven’t had one deficiency notice yet!” makes this person appear to be someone who “cuts corners” due to her demonstration of this behavior by not forming a correct sentence. The lady who sent this email should have said:

I am always punctual and my high level of quality is second to none for companies like yours.

PROBLEM NO. 5

I am not hiring virtual bankruptcy assistants. I provide the training tools to other virtual assistants. Therefore, because the lady told me that she had “visited my website”, it is evident she is lying. If she would have visited my website, she would have quickly understood that we do not hire virtual bankruptcy assistants.

SUMMARY

Below are some tips to help you construct better marketing communications:

1. Train your brain to be on the “outside looking in” instead of the other way around. Look at everything from the customer’s perspective when writing marketing materials.

2. NEVER send an email until you have read it at least once and ran a spell check. I cannot stress the importance of this simple task. However, many people would rather concentrate on “quantity” (answering more emails) rather than “quality” (answering less emails); which can be detrimental for any size business.

Important: If you want to cut corners to save time, do it somewhere else in your business. Don’t cut corners in your email communication.

3. Keep in mind that every word you type (either in an email or post on a bulletin board) becomes PERMANENT. There are dedicated websites that do nothing but store archives of websites. These websites can be accessed and the words you typed in 2007 may still be read in 2027. Watch what you say. The unprofessional words you use today could come back and haunt you 20, 30 or more years into the future. Some could even result in a large loss of business.

4. Watch your daily emails for well-written marketing communications. We all receive too much junk mail. But instead of deleting it before reading it, scan through and see if you find any marketing communications that will give you some ideas to write your own. When you discover an email that does a good job of selling a product, keep it in an IDEAS folder. Then, the next time you need to develop a marketing piece, go through your IDEAS folder and customize the wording to fit your particular product or service.

What is a Virtual Bankruptcy Assistant?

A virtual bankruptcy assistant is a highly-skilled business owner who provides a wide variety of virtual services to bankruptcy attorneys. No longer is a law firm plagued with the time and cost to advertise, interview and train new employees. For jobs that do not require completion inside the office, a virtual bankruptcy assistant is an excellent source for law firms.

What are the advantages for an attorney hiring a virtual bankruptcy assistant?

No financial risk for the law firm. If they are not satisfied with the work of a virtual bankruptcy assistant, they are not required to pay the fee.

No overhead expenditures for the attorney (i.e., desk, chair, office supplies and employee costs). Virtual bankruptcy assistants already have established their office and use their own software.

No office politics. The majority of the time, the only contact the attorney will have with the virtual bankruptcy assistant is by email. This eliminates staff and employee conflicts which wastes time and costs money.

And many more. There are more than 100 additional reasons that law firms benefit by hiring virtual bankruptcy assistants. These are detailed in the book: How to Increase Profits for Your Law Firm.

What types of jobs do virtual bankruptcy assistants perform for bankruptcy attorneys?

Preparation of Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy petitions.

In the same way a tax preparer takes your information and completes your 1040 form, it requires training to learn where to place debt information in the proper areas of the federal bankruptcy forms and schedules. But once you acquire this skill, you can use it to build a profitable and long-term business career. Or, you can use the skill as a “stepping stone” to move on to other areas of bankruptcy, such as Chapter 13s and Chapter 11s.

Do I have to be a paralegal to work for bankruptcy attorneys?

No! Drafting bankruptcy petitions is not a skill taught in law school or any paralegal course. Paralegals normally focus their duties on more advanced areas of bankruptcy law including trial preparation, appeal procedures and working on more high profile cases. In the past, drafting bankruptcy petitions was considered to be nothing more than filling in forms. When the forms were filled out wrong or were missing information, the bankruptcy court rejected the filing and the attorney and the staff inherited more work in filing amendments, motions and other legal documents to correct the errors and omissions.

Why is there now a focus on skilled virtual bankruptcy assistants?

On October 17, 2005, the bankruptcy law underwent major changes. Suddenly, the bankruptcy petition was elevated to the status of a “crucial” and important document. The new law even imposed sanctions on attorneys who submitted a bankruptcy petition with incomplete or non-verified information. Unfortunately, since a large majority of bankruptcy attorneys did not have access to skill training in this area they had very limited choices.

Learning the skill of drafting well detailed bankruptcy petitions is your key to a long-term future career.

Ask any bankruptcy attorney if they are satisfied with the petition drafting skills of their office staff and most of them will say “no.” Due of the lack of education in this area, the law office staff had to learn how to draft bankruptcy petitions from their co-workers. The co-workers normally learned from past errors and mistakes they made. Therefore, when you learn the skills to become a trained virtual bankruptcy specialist, your skills are rare and your income earning potential is endless.
