On Friday, October 30, 2009, the Chapter 13 Training Seminar was held at the TravelLodge in Los Angeles, California.  Clay Holland of MyBankruptcyAssistant.Com was the instructor for this class and Victoria Ring was present remotely to address questions from the students.

After the seminar was over, Clay Holland submitted the following report:

I just returned home from a trip to Los Angeles California where I had the opportunity to teach Victoria Ring’s Chapter 13 Seminar materials to five attendees.  There were three attorneys present, a paralegal, and a Virtual Bankruptcy Assistant.

Larry Smith has a very successful practice.  In fact he said that he has a good economy practice and a bad economy practice, so with the state of the economy, he was there to learn how to enhance his bad economy practice.  Larry had a lot of valuable input to share with the class.

Another attorney, Pete Hatfield, told us about how he used to have a private practice with two of his daughters who are attorneys, but after they moved on and left the practice, he did not want to run it by himself, and has been doing corporate law for about 12 years. His employer is relocating to another state, and since he has decided to stay in California, he is going to reopen his practice, including doing bankruptcy work and wanted to get a jump start by attending the seminar.  I am sure he will do great!

The third attorney in attendance, Rudy Bunagan, has been doing Chapter 7s for a long time but has been referring Chapter 13s to other attorneys.  Rather than continuing to lose this revenue, Rudy decided to attend the Chapter 13 seminar to learn how to handle these cases.

Our paralegal in attendance, Angela Cooper, works for a law firm with about 40 attorneys, and has been preparing bankruptcy petitions since the mid 1990’s.  She really knows her stuff, and it was good to see her there to learn even more about Chapter 13s.

Rounding out our attendees, we had Dee Medlin of http://www.T11VA.com with us.  Dee is a former software developer that wanted to be able to work from home, and when she found out about the virtual bankruptcy assistant concept, jumped in with both feet.  That was nearly three years ago, and today she has 12 attorneys that she prepares petitions for.

Our most popular topic at the seminar was cramming down debts on vehicles, and stripping mortgages on houses, which are skills that are taught in the Chapter 13 seminar.

I just returned from Seattle, Washington where I spoke on the topic: Bankruptcy Law Updates and What Paralegals Should Know About the Creditors Perspective, at the Washington State Paralegal Association CLE Conference which was held at the Seattle University Law School.

My purpose in attending this conference was to bring more awareness to the necessity of a well-detailed bankruptcy petition as well as the virtual bankruptcy assistant (VBA) world.  As most of you know, VBAs are trained professionals who can benefit attorneys and save law firms thousands of dollars per year because of their elevated bankruptcy petition skills.  Increasing awareness in the importance of the bankruptcy petition is another method to furthering the awareness of the VBA. The reception was much better than I expected.   (Robin Harvey even told me that the paralegals were talking about bankruptcy in the hallway after I spoke.  This is a demonstration of the positive reception concerning his topic).

In the past, when I tried to provide knowledge to the paralegal groups, many of them were not impressed with the subject of bankruptcy.  However, the times are changing.  As I pointed out at the conference during my speech, the unemployment rate rose in 43 states last month (September 2009).  This brings the overall national average to 9.8 percent which is the highest unemployment rate since the Great Depression.  These statistics are phenomenal and they indicate that bankruptcy filings will only increase.  At the moment there is an average of 10.58 bankruptcy filings per DAY.

We had a lower number in attendance for Denver compared to Los Angeles, but I love these smaller seminars. It gives me more time to spend with each person and I get to know more about them. Plus, we all had a wonderful time and everyone went back home with a new attitude to get their businesses up and running.  When seminars produce this level of effect, I consider them to be a great success regardless of the number of attendees.

On September 25 and 26, 2009, the bankruptcy seminar was held in Denver, Colorado and it was the most dynamic 713Training.Com has ever offered.  The main reason for this was because this seminar was the first time that Attorney Matthew Williamson and I joined forces.  I taught the Chapter 13 seminar on Friday and Matthew taught marketing on Saturday.  The response from the attendees was better than we could have expected and we thank those who attended.

DAY 1 – CHAPTER 13 BANKRUPTCY SEMINAR

The group that attended this seminar came from very impressive backgrounds.  For example; Rita Browner of Kings Georgia, Virginia had been preparing bankruptcy petitions for attorneys before the law change in 2005.  She was such a joy to have in the class because she and I could talk about the old days of how we used to do things.  This helped the others to appreciate how much easier it is today with the improvements in technology.

One thing that shocked me was that Rita still knew how to calculate a Chapter 13 plan by hand.  I just received a phone call from an attorney the other day who asked me about the different mathematical formulas for calculating Chapter 13 Plans.  I could not answer her because it has been at least 12 years or more since I did a Chapter 13 Plan without the aid of a computer.  But Rita Browner knew all about the old method and was still using it.  You should have seen the expression on her face when I showed her how easy it was to calculate a Chapter 13 Plan with the software Chapter 13 calculator.  Rita said that attending the seminar had changed her entire life.

Tammi Miller from Nashville, Tennessee also attended.  She visited Colorado back in May 2009 when she trained with me on Chapter 7s.  Therefore, she was already familiar with them before she attended the seminar.  Tammi is still currently employed full time but will be opening her new virtual bankruptcy assistant (VBA) business very soon.  Tammi is playing it smart; she is going to work her VBA business simultaneously with her full time job in order to keep the bills paid.  Then, when Tammi is sure that she has enough business coming in, she will leave her secure employment and go into business for herself. I am very proud of Tammi.  She is going to be an excellent VBA and our industry is blessed that she decided to make this field her chosen career.

Victoria Brink-Guillot and Deb Shaffer both flew in from Pennsylvania.  Before the seminar, both had no idea that each one existed.  However, during the seminar Victoria and Deb discussed various business ideas and finally came to a very clear direction that both are going to follow when they return home.

Do you have any idea what this really means?  Many people spend years obtaining a clear direction for this business.  But Victoria and Deb not only discovered a clear direction; they also found each other and plan to work together targeting the attorney market in New York City.  There is no doubt they will have more work from attorneys than they can possibly handle.

How did Victoria and Deb derive at this conclusion?  They learned from Matthew Williamson (an attorney marketing genius) how to first identify the problem.  Both Victoria and Deb had tried marketing to attorneys in their rural Pennsylvania communities but neither had any success.  But Matthew helped them to open their eyes and question as to why they were limiting themselves to rural Pennsylvania?  They both lived less than 2 hours from New York City.  Since there are literally thousands of attorneys in New York City; the obvious answer is to market to New York City attorneys.

DAY 2 – LEGAL MARKETING SEMINAR

I have attended at least 200 marketing seminars throughout my career and nothing compares to the marketing seminar that Attorney Matthew Williamson presented.  The attendees at this seminar were dominated by attorneys and each one learned so much that their brains went into overload.  Why? Because Matthew Williamson is a dynamic presenter who teaches from personal experience.  Matthew has literally lost tens of thousands of dollars on bad marketing mistakes.  He knows what it is like to build a company from the ground up and he knows every marketing loophole all the way to the top.

John Cimino (an attorney who attended the marketing seminar) told me that his head could not absorb any more information.  I will have to agree with him.  Matthew Williamson is so knowledgeable about marketing that his mind is thinking at 1,000 miles per hour.  In fact, he provided so much information, and packed so much into the 6 hours, that it was a mental exercise just to keep up with him.  I cannot recommend Matthew highly enough and I urge you to contact him if you want to build your law practice or virtual bankruptcy assistant business. The Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Training Seminar was held at the Hacienda Hotel in El Sugundo; a suburb of Los Angeles, California on August 14, 2009. This was the first bankruptcy seminar we have done in California and it was a great success.  A total of 44 were in attendance.

The First Order of Business

Cheri and Victoria began the seminar by meeting with the attendees and distributing the seminar training materials as well as name badges.  We were pleased to have more attorneys present at this seminar than previous seminars.  The group consisted of 65% attorneys and 35% non attorneys.

This excellent mix provided the VBAs in attendance with an excellent marketing angle.  Working side by side with attorneys throughout the day, the VBAs had a unique opportunity to personally get to know them and form a good work ethic.  In many cases, VBAs exchanged information with attorneys, who said they were going to hire VBAs.  Even the attorneys who already had an employed paralegal were interested in hiring VBAs for their Chapter 13 petitions and continue using their hired staff for Chapter 7s.  Most attorneys, once they weight the financial benefits, will hire VBAs for their Chapter 13s because it saves them a great deal of time and money.

When we saw this unique opportunity take place right before our eyes, Matthew Williamson (an attorney who specializes in marketing) suggested we hold a two day seminar.  The first day would be for Chapter 13 training and the second day would be for marketing.  I became very excited about this idea because it will do absolute wonders for VBAs who need to market to attorneys and attorneys will be able to grow their bankruptcy law practice.

When I returned from Denver I jumped in and get the ball rolling.  I have secured a meeting room at the Crystal Inn here in Denver, Colorado and Matthew and I plan to hold the seminar on September 25 and 26, 2009.  The Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Training Seminar will be held on September 25 and the Marketing Seminar on September 26.

New Marketing Seminars

There is no better method of learning about marketing than from someone (just like you) that has learned from the School of Hard Knocks and lived to tell about it.  Matthew Williamson is that kind of man.  He began his career as a paralegal back in the early 1990s. Seminar Summary

Overall, we received an excellent response from the attorneys and non attorneys who attended the Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Training Seminar.  It was wonderful to meet so many new attorneys as well as some of my old friends.  Sid Findley, Gary Ostad and Susan Guinn are all Certified VBAs who attended.  They have stayed with me throughout my career and I treasure their friendship dearly.   I also had the pleasure of meeting and working with two new attorneys to the field of bankruptcy: Darren Manibog and Dina Farhat.  Both have previous law experience and transitioning them to bankruptcy was not very difficult at all.

One of the benefits I provide to attendees at my seminars is two months of ongoing training and support after they return back to the office.  I need to do this in order to do my job properly.  Why? Because every bankruptcy petition is unique.  It would be impossible to cover every possible scenario in the seminar so the two months of ongoing support is necessary to implement and utilize the skills taught at the seminar.  After returning back to my office, I have already provided this support for 8 attorneys who attended.
